GİSAM (Audio-Visual Systems Research and Application Center) is a research and application center affiliated with the Middle East Technical University. One of GİSAM’s important tasks is to maintain METU’s visual memory. Witnessing many important events on campus since its establishment in 1993, GİSAM also records the pre-founding times through oral history studies, building and preserving METU’s institutional memory.
Promotional videos and image films are prepared for the purpose of introducing the scientific, social and cultural environment of METU to the prospective students. GİSAM, which primarily prepares promotional films of the departments and centers within METU, also prepares promotional films of scientific research projects and social responsibility projects, as well as those of organizations outside of METU upon request.
Bringing science to the community is one of GİSAM’s most important missions. Short research videos are produced to make scientific studies conducted at METU more accessible to wider audiences. GİSAM also produces dissemination videos for EU projects and other international and national scientific research projects.
GİSAM also works closely with the METU Science Communication Office. Programs, popular science videos and video podcasts produced throughout the year are delivered to the public through METU social media accounts.
Audio-visual educational contents are prepared for use in classes and for distance learning. In addition, all course videos at METU OpenCourseWare portal are also produced in collaboration with GİSAM and the Distance Education Research Center.
One of GİSAM’s most important tasks is to keep METU’s visual memory. Since its establishment in 1993, GİSAM has been witnessing many important moments and events on campus with its cameras, and by recording the memories of witnesses before its establishment, it is building and preserving ODTÜ’s institutional memory. With projects such as “The History of METU Documentary Series” and “Oral History”, GİSAM is not only illuminating the history of ODTÜ, but also indirectly that of Turkey, higher education, and science in Turkey.
GİSAM has updated its technical capabilities in recent years to be able to broadcast live with 4 cameras. Some events and science programs are broadcast live throughout the year.
GİSAM also prepares videos for METU’s social media accounts throughout the year. These videos are posted on METU’s social media accounts such as YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.
GİSAM has been offering various elective courses every semester since its early years. In addition, free workshops organized at each year provide both ODTÜ students and amateur and professional outside the university with opportunities for education and production.
Courses that have been offered in GİSAM up today: Video Production, Reality and Cinema, Visual Thinking, Modern Visual Arts, Media Economics, and International News.
Introduction to Video Production Course: Students will study and produce experimental films that explores new ways of seeing, storytelling, shooting, and editing.
In addition to the videos produced by GİSAM, it also contributes to the social life of ODTÜ throughout the year by organizing various film screenings, events and competitions in partnership with various cinema organizations and festivals.
From short film screenings to posters, such as Benim ODTÜM and Share u’r research competition visuals and videos.
GİSAM has participated in many national and international projects since its establishment. Sometimes it has supported the projects of institutions from within and outside ODTÜ, and sometimes produced its own projects

Wrench -Whispers of Time as Narratives of Climate Change, aims to address the effects of climate change on tangible and intangible heritage while widening the mainstream understanding of heritage to include storytelling, narratives, and ephemeral legacies. Even more than ruination, abandonment, or major disruption, it is when it becomes mute, unable to tell any story that heritage is lost forever. WRENCH envisions heritage as both something at risk and something able to tell a story about the risk we are all running. https://webs.uab.cat/wrench/deliverables/
The new opportunities that technological developments offer to creative sectors are also closely followed by GİSAM. Preparations are being made to provide products in new digital narrative areas such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Interactive Documentary, and Projection Mapping
